PIRN Conceptual Model

The PIRN Conceptual Model illustrates how we work together to improve care and outcomes for hospitalized children and youth in the general paediatric inpatient setting. At the heart of PIRN are children, youth, and families, researchers, and partners who collaborate across different stages of the research-to-impact journey - from asking important questions to creating meaningful change in practice.
The model outlines the dynamic process; starting with real-world clinical practice questions guiding the development of foundational, high-quality research studies. Evidence and findings from research studies are shared widely and implemented in real-world inpatient paediatric settings to directly improve clinical practice and strengthen health systems. This creates a continuous cycle of learning, improvement, and impact—always grounded in what matters most to children, families, and healthcare teams.
Surrounding this core cycle is PIRN's broader goals of building capacity, training, education, and mentorship, to support sustainable growth, knowledge sharing, and leadership within the paediatric hospital medicine community.
